Medicine Making In Our Own Community
Though it was a rainy day, the kitchen was filled with the warm, spicy scent of a winter remedy in the making. We gathered for our Elderberry Syrup Apothecary Class, an interactive workshop designed to connect us with the natural world and the age-old tradition of herbal medicine.
Elderberry syrup is a staple for many people during cold and flu season, and for good reason. The small, dark berries of the elder tree are packed with antioxidants and vitamins. Our instructor, herbalist & farms apothecary, Melissa, explained that these powerful compounds can help support our immune systems. But beyond the science, there's a certain magic to making your own medicine—a feeling of self-reliance and connection to nature that you just can't get from a store-bought bottle.
We started with the basics, learning about the proper way to prepare dried elderberries and other ingredients like cinnamon, ginger, and cloves. The room was buzzing with conversation as we shared stories and tips. The process itself is surprisingly simple: simmer the berries and spices, strain the liquid, and then add honey to create the final, rich syrup. The final product was a deep, purple-black liquid that looked as potent as it smelled. Each of us left with a jar of our own homemade syrup and a newfound appreciation for the simple power of plants.
This workshop wasn't just about making syrup; it was about building community and sharing knowledge. It was a reminder that some of the most powerful tools for our health can be found in our own kitchens and gardens. We hope to host more workshops like this in the future, bringing people together to learn, create, and share in the magic of natural wellness.
