Community-supported urban farms in the city of Schenectady, NY
Schenectady Urban Farms’ mission is to lower barriers to healthy food, medicinals, and plants while bringing food security, increased green space, agricultural skills, and economic opportunities to Schenectady.
What we do
Community Farms
Both of our farms are community-supported urban farming initiatives. Farm members cultivate a variety of fruits and vegetables, assorted flowers, and herbs, while also caring for honeybees in our apiary and egg-laying chickens. This model of community farming allows us to foster relationships, encourage sustainability, and work towards a greener Schenectady.
Apothecary
Our apothecary program allows us to grow, harvest, and make natural products with a wide assortment of purposes. Examples include elderberry medicine and syrup, lip balms, hand creams, bath salts, herbal teas, and more! Many of the plants, flowers, and herbs we produce on the farms have medicinal purposes, Our apothecary is a foundation of our mission of working towards sustainable, community-focused living.
Compost Project
Our Fehr Ave Farm serves a host site for the Schenectady Community Compost Project. The project, launched in May of 2023, supports the expansion of food scraps recycling and increases sustainable materials management education efforts throughout Schenectady. Food scraps are turned into nutrient-rich compost which in turn enhances the assortment of crops grown on the farms.
